Three OUSD Robotics Teams Heading to World Championship

Orange, CA – March 9, 2015 – Robotics teams from Crescent Elementary and El Rancho Charter Middle School did an outstanding job competing at the Southern California VEX IQ State Championship last month and qualified to compete in the 2015 VEX IQ Challenge World Championship in April.

Crescent Elementary’s two teams of third through sixth grade students brought home numerous awards and set two world records.

Crescent Crazy Stackers Team 15A won first place for both Individual Robotic Skills and Programming, setting the elementary world record in each category. They also took home the Overall Excellence Award.

Crescent Crazy Stackers Team 15B won the Robotic Design Award for Best in State.

Also advancing to the World Championship is a group of eight 7th grade students from El Rancho, the Neobots, who were on Crescent’s World Champion robotics teams last year.

“El Rancho did not sponsor the Neobots; however, the students were so motivated by their experience last year that the parents and students formed an independent team. We are so excited that they will be competing at the World Championship along with our two Crescent teams!” said Principal Randi Leach.

The qualifying robots were designed to work collaboratively with opposing teams’ robots, as an alliance, to grab and stack towers of like-colored cubes for the highest point totals. Students operating the robots had to master skills such as precision driving, cube balancing, and the ability to observe and react to the actions of other robots on the field.

The 2015 VEX IQ Challenge World Championship will take place at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky. More information is available online at http://www.robotevents.com/.
