OUSD Orange High Revalidated as an AVID National Demonstration School

Orange, CA – December 8, 2017 -Orange Unified School District is excited to congratulate Orange High School for being granted revalidation as an AVID National Demonstration School! This distinction is granted to schools that have clearly demonstrated an ongoing pursuit of excellence, both in the AVID Elective and AVID Schoolwide, to ensure college and career readiness and rigorous academic performance for all students! A National Demonstration School exhibits a college readiness system that is evident in all four domains: Leadership, Systems, Instruction, and Culture. The OHS leadership, AVID Elective teachers and staff have been working diligently to ensure that the infusion of WICOR is evident school wide and that their elective tutorials are focused on collaboration and inquiry. Thursday the visiting AVID validation team commended OHS for their Schoolwide Binder Initiative, explicit facilitation of ensuring college readiness as evidenced by SAT day and College Application Day, implementation of Critical Reading Strategies and Costa’s levels of questioning, and increased access to AP Classes and Dual Enrollment courses. The biggest accolade that needs to be shared is that the visiting team was touched to witness that ALL students were highly engaged in lessons that were meaningful, relevant and rigorous! “This is what we ultimately strive for as a district and OHS has met the expectation!” stated Principal Dennis McCuistion.
A special thank-you is extended to Celinna Pinelo, Assistant Principal, Alice Prothero, OHS AVID Coordinator, Laura Herbert, P21 Specialist, Oscar Ruiz, Counselor and the exemplary teachers Dani Kraft, Matt Cooper, Laurie Wielenga, Leticia Gonzalez, Barbara Sataki, Karin Imhoof and Eric Van Veen for their dedication and commitment to ensuring that ALL students have increased access to learning opportunities that support their future success.
